1) I gave them 4 examples of essays of life stories that ESL students at about their level had written and published to read before class. 2) Another student or I read the essays aloud in class and elicited questions to make sure students understood the essays. 3) We identified, paragraph by paragraph, whether each paragraph was written in the past, present or future (sometimes more than 1) in two essays. In each paragraph we identified cues (verb tense, words or phrases) that let the reader know the time frame. I asked students to do the same with the remaining 2 essays for homework, and we went over those essays the next day. 4) I explained ways to organize a narrative life story essay, such as chronological, comparing and contrasting life before coming to U.S. and after coming to U.S. or a combination of both. In small groups they reread the sample essays and decided how they were organized. Each group shared their decision and how they made that decision. 5) Students talked with a partner about their life stories. 6) I gave them the essay assignment explained in 1.4, and the students had a half an hour of class time to begin writing their essays, while I circled the class making sure they were on target and answering questions. Students were asked to complete the essay for homework over a 3-day weekend. 7) On the Monday the essay was due, I gave each student a checklist using the same criteria as in my grading rubric. They worked with a partner or in groups to complete the rubric, and, again, I circled the classroom answering questions. 8) Students typed their essays in Google Docs during a computer class I teach that is coupled with the grammar & writing class. 9) Students gave me their essays and completed checklists when they had finished typing them.
